Manila: Senate President Francis Escudero on Wednesday called for the revocation, not mere suspension, of the driver’s licenses of motorists involved in road rage and reckless behavior to restore discipline on Philippine roads. In a news release, the Senate leader said videos of irresponsible drivers, colloquially called ‘kamote’, have become a trend on social media, which, he pointed out, is not funny or entertaining. ‘Ang daming napeperwisyo at kadalasan nauuwi sa karahasan ang mga insidenteng ito (These incidents cause a lot of harm and often end in violence),’ he said. ‘To ensure that our roads are safe from these motorists, their licenses should be revoked, not suspended.’
According to Philippines News Agency, the Senate leader said the standard 90-day license suspension imposed by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) falls short as a deterrent, stressing that driving is a privilege that comes with serious responsibilities. ‘It cannot be overemphasized that having a driver’s license is a privilege and not a right,’ Escudero said. ‘Kapag walang disiplina ang motorista, dapat lang na tanggalan sila ng lisensya (If a motorist is undisciplined, their license should be revoked),’ he added.
