Philippines Establishes Diplomatic Relations with Grenada

St. Kitts and Nevis: The Philippines formally established diplomatic relations with the Caribbean state of Grenada, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Monday. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Grenada Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Joseph Andall signed a Joint Communique on the sidelines of the Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meeting on May 8.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DFA stated that this development marks a new phase in the friendly relations between the Philippines and Grenada. With this agreement, the Philippines now maintains diplomatic ties with 14 CARICOM countries. Manalo attended the CARICOM meeting in St. Kitts and Nevis from May 8 to 9, where he addressed the grouping’s Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR).

Manalo emphasized the shared interests between the Philippines and Caribbean states as maritime nations facing common challenges. He noted the influence these nations have on global issues such as climate change and international finance. The Philippines’ commitment to the United Nations and its bid for a seat on the Security Council for 2027-2028 were also highlighted.

Additionally, Manalo announced a contribution from the Philippines to the CARICOM Development Fund, reinforcing the country’s support for South-South Cooperation and inclusive development. The Caribbean foreign ministers expressed appreciation for the Philippines’ initiatives and recognized the contributions of Filipino nationals in the region.

The DFA noted that 2025 will be significant for the Philippines and several Caribbean nations as they celebrate the 25th anniversaries of diplomatic relations with Belize and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The Philippines will also commemorate anniversaries with Haiti, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Saint Lucia in the coming years.

Manalo and the foreign ministers discussed expanding cooperation in areas such as health, maritime training, and education. They agreed on the importance of international cooperation amid global uncertainties, especially among developing countries.
