Vientiane: Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane recently received a courtesy call from Pablo Kang, Special Representative of the Australian Foreign Minister, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during their working visit to Laos.
According to Lao News Agency, the meeting aimed to follow up on legal proceedings related to the deaths of two Australian tourists in 2024. Minister Thongsavanh expressed appreciation for the visit, while Mr. Kang thanked the Lao side for its hospitality.
Both sides acknowledged the longstanding relationship between Laos and Australia, which has been elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership since early 2024. The Lao side conveyed condolences to the Australian government, people, and the victims' families, reaffirming their commitment to resolving the case through the Lao legal and judicial process. They assured cooperation and facilitation of the Special Representative's mission at both central and local levels.
The Australian side appreciated the reception and expressed hope for a prompt resolution of the case in accordance with Lao law. Prior to the meeting, Minister Thongsavanh had a telephone conversation with Penny Wong, Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, updating her on the progress of the investigation. Both ministers agreed to continue enhancing bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit.
