Gov’t Sets Ambitious Goal to Halve Road Traffic Deaths by 2030

Vientiane: Officials said the strategy sets clear policy directions to improve transport safety and ensure more orderly and secure use of roads and vehicles over the next decade. Road safety remains a national priority focused on protecting lives and property while safeguarding public health and social welfare.

According to Lao News Agency, rapid socio-economic growth in recent years has led to a sharp rise in vehicle ownership and road use. Authorities noted that enforcement of traffic regulations has not always kept pace with increased demand on road infrastructure, contributing to higher risks for road users.

To address these challenges, the government is expanding investment in road safety programmes and strengthening coordination with domestic agencies while seeking continued cooperation from international partners.

Although traffic accidents cannot be entirely eliminated, authorities stressed that most road injuries and deaths are preventable. Public and private sectors, development partners and citizens nationwide are being encouraged to support implementation to ensure effective and sustainable results.
