Laos and Myanmar Sign Agreement for Border Mekong Hydropower Feasibility Study

Vientiane: An agreement between Laos and Myanmar for a feasibility study on a hydropower project along the Mekong River was signed on July 4, 2026, at the Crowne Plaza Vientiane. The signatories were Phongsupthavy Sole Co., Ltd. of Lao PDR and Primus of Myanmar. The event was attended by Manothong Vongxay, Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce of Lao PDR, and U Aye Kyaw, Deputy Minister of Electric Power and Energy of Myanmar.

According to Lao News Agency, officials from both nations emphasized the agreement as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the electricity and energy sector. This initiative is also seen as a way to further solidify the longstanding friendship between Laos and Myanmar.

The agreement outlines that the two companies will collaborate on a comprehensive feasibility study for a hydropower project situated on the Mekong River at the border area shared by the two countries. The proposed project aims for an installed generation capacity of up to 2,790 megawatts, with the feasibility study expected to conclude within 34 months.

The hydropower project is anticipated to boost energy security, meet the increasing electricity demand in both countries, and align with ASEAN's goals for renewable energy and regional power connectivity.

The agreement demonstrates the shared commitment of Lao PDR and Myanmar in promoting sustainable energy development, enhancing cross-border infrastructure collaboration, and encouraging long-term economic integration in the region.
