ASEAN Addresses Cambodia-Thailand Border Tensions in Special Meeting

Kuala lumpur: At a special ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Chair Malaysia emphasized the necessity of maintaining regional peace and stability, urging Cambodia and Thailand to fully implement previously signed agreements to resolve ongoing tensions along their shared border.

According to Lao News Agency, Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, in his opening remarks, highlighted the meeting's aim to renew efforts for stability in the affected areas. He stated that ASEAN must undertake necessary actions to preserve regional peace and stability.

The special meeting aimed not only at de-escalating the tension but also at enhancing trust among the conflicting parties and facilitating dialogue despite existing differences. This meeting followed an agreement reached by the Malaysian Prime Minister and his Thai and Cambodian counterparts on December 11.

A separate statement released by the Malaysian foreign ministry on December 21 mentioned that the meeting would provide a platform for ASEAN foreign ministers to exchange views on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand. The meeting would also consider potential steps that ASEAN members might take to support ongoing efforts towards reducing hostilities and promoting peace and stability in the region.
