Vientiane: The Ministry of Health recently hosted a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Food and Drug and the Clinton Health Access Initiative to enhance food and alcohol safety systems in the Lao PDR.According to Lao News Agency, the event was attended by Vice Minister of Health Arphone Visathep. The agreement was signed by Dr. Souksomkhoun Chanthamat, Director General of the Food and Drug Department, and Mr. Gareth Young, Country Director of CHAI.Key stakeholders, including the Deputy Ambassador of Australia to the Lao PDR and the Representative of the World Health Organization in Laos, were present at the ceremony. The initiative, funded by the Australian Government with a budget of AUD 1.5 million, aims to bolster surveillance, prevention, and response mechanisms related to food safety and alcoholic beverages.CHAI will act as the project manager, collaborating closely with national authorities to improve safety standards and emergency response capabilities. This cooperation is anticipated to enhance public health protection by implementing more effective monitoring systems and coordinated risk management across the nation.
