Vientiane: On Tuesday, Australian Ambassador Megan Jones met Mr. Khamphan Pheuyavong, Head of the Party Central Committee Propaganda and Training Board to highlight Australia’s growing engagement with and support for the Lao media sector. Both sides agreed to further deepen their cooperation as part of efforts to advance the Laos-Australia Comprehensive Partnership signed by the countries’ Prime Ministers in March last year.
According to Lao News Agency, Ambassador Megan Jones was the first ambassador in Laos to visit Mr. Khamphan since the transfer of the media sector from the Information portfolio to the Propaganda and Training Board. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of media in facilitating public understanding of important issues, especially those that are complex. She expressed gratitude for the Lao media’s role in promoting long-standing Laos-Australia relations.
The Ambassador articulated a desire to collaborate with Lao media in adapting to the evolving media landscape, particularly in terms of digitalisation. In May, Australia organized a workshop aimed at helping Lao media achieve financial sustainability and tackle commercial challenges. Additionally, during Laos’ ASEAN chair year, Australia facilitated a media workshop to prepare Lao journalists for their ASEAN chairmanship roles.
Ambassador Jones announced the introduction of Australia’s ABC Digital Dialogue to Southeast Asia, with Laos as the first stop in August. This capacity-building event aims to equip journalists, influencers, and content creators with enhanced skills and knowledge to address challenges such as AI adoption and the identification of misinformation.
Mr. Khamphan expressed gratitude for Australia’s support, noting the significance of Australia’s capacity-building efforts and technical assistance in Laos’ development. He reiterated his commitment to continuing the partnership with Australia, including exploring new opportunities to address digital era challenges.
