Iloilo city: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) initiated the 2025 national Artificial Intelligence (AI) Fest in Iloilo City, focusing on enhancing AI development within the country.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., in his keynote address, emphasized the necessity for science-driven solutions and collaborative efforts to shape a future that is inclusive and prosperous. He highlighted that since 2017, DOST has invested PHP2.3 billion across 113 Research and Development projects to bolster the AI sector.
Solidum unveiled the National AI Strategy for the Philippines (NAIS PH), which aims to steer the development, deployment, and governance of AI until 2028. The vision for 2028 involves AI driving innovation, governance, community empowerment, and industrial competitiveness.
The festival commenced with an exhibit in collaboration with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Iloilo, showcasing AI innovations. DOST introduced four significant AI projects, including Talino.AI, a technical assistant tool designed to facilitate public interaction with the department’s technologies and services.
DOST Regional Director for Western Visayas Rowen Gelonga stated that these initiatives would enhance service delivery across various sectors. SmartGrid.AI, a joint endeavor between the Iloilo Science and Technology University and More Electric and Power Corporation, was also launched to optimize power distribution.
Additionally, the AI Ready ASEAN Training Program, in collaboration with the ASEAN Youth Organization, aims to provide comprehensive training on AI utilization and ethics. The AWS AI Innovation Sandbox, developed with Amazon Web Services, offers a platform for AI-related web development.
Gelonga noted that these projects aim to establish a more viable and ethical AI landscape throughout the country. The festival, themed “Coding a Better Future: Responsible AI for Cities and Communities,” includes several key activities.
These activities encompass SineAI for creative industries, an AI Hackathon, AI Exhibits featuring national and international contributions, and a technical conference exploring various AI-related topics. The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures including DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Dr. Sancho Mabborang, Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Leah Buendia, and other regional leaders.
