Vientiane: Electricite du Laos (EDL) and CTE Co., Ltd. have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to conduct a feasibility study for a 100-megawatt solar power project in Oudomxay Province. This initiative aims to reduce electricity imports during the dry season.

According to Lao News Agency, the signing ceremony took place at EDL headquarters in Vientiane Capital, with the agreement being signed by Souliya Manivong, Deputy Managing Director of EDL, and Yang Yong Seok, Director of CTE. The event was attended by representatives from EDL's legal and contracts department and partner companies.

The proposed project is part of the government's energy development strategy for 2025-2027 and its long-term vision through 2050, which outlines priority sites for the expansion of clean energy nationwide. The solar facility is planned to be located in the Nam Hin Reservoir area, specifically covering Ban Na Lae and Ban Na Saen Kham villages in Xay District, with an installed capacity of 100 MW to enhance the northern power grid.

The project aims to reduce costly electricity imports during periods of low hydropower output, stabilize domestic supply through solar generation during the dry season, and create opportunities for electricity exports to neighboring countries, potentially generating foreign currency revenue.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, EDL and CTE will jointly conduct a detailed feasibility study to assess the technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the project prior to its full development.
