Foreign Minister Leads Delegation at Lao-Cambodian Border Meeting in Phnom Penh

Phnom penh: The 8th Meeting of the Lao-Cambodian Joint Border Committee took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on July 26, led by key officials from both nations.

According to Lao News Agency, the Lao delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, who also serves as the Chairman of the Lao-Cambodian Joint Border Committee. In parallel, the Cambodian delegation was led by Lam Chea, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Border Affairs and Chairman of the Cambodia-Laos Joint Border Committee. Officials from relevant central and local authorities from both countries were also present at the meeting.

The meeting endorsed the minutes from the 11th Meeting of the Lao-Cambodian Joint Border Technical Subcommittees, which took place in April in Luang Prabang, alongside the minutes of a meeting held on July 25 in Phnom Penh between the Chairmen of the Joint Border Technical Subcommittees. These endorsements confirmed the results of recent joint fieldwork focused on identifying new locations for border markers to replace old ones and installing additional markers along the shared border.

The period between June 2024 and July 2025 saw the successful identification of 75 new border marker locations and the installation of 134 new markers, either as replacements or additions. Since the commencement of the border demarcation effort in May 2023, both countries have determined the location of 241 border markers, which represents 47.25% of the total 510 planned markers. Construction has been completed for 207 markers, covering 40.58% of the total.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed outstanding border issues and preparations for celebrating the 30th anniversary of the joint Lao-Cambodian border demarcation initiative. Both parties agreed to continue their cooperation, assigning technical teams to conduct further joint fieldwork and expedite the completion of the remaining border marker tasks.

The progress made during this meeting signifies a considerable step in the ongoing effort to peacefully and clearly demarcate the border between Laos and Cambodia. It reflects the strong commitment of both governments to building a peaceful, friendly, and cooperative border based on the aspirations of the two Parties, States, and peoples. The meeting was conducted in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, highlighting the enduring friendship between the two nations.
