Foreign Ministers of Lao PDR and Republic of Korea Discuss Bilateral Cooperation

Kuala lumpur: Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Cho Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, on October 27, 2025, on the occasion of accompanying Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR, to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to Lao News Agency, both sides expressed their pleasure at meeting each other for the first time since assuming their respective offices. They valued the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Lao PDR and the Republic of Korea, marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

Both ministers agreed to promote high-level exchanges and visits and to support each other in regional and international forums. The Lao side appreciated the Republic of Korea’s assistance in various fields, significantly contributing to the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR through Official Development Assistance for key projects.

The two sides welcomed the expansion of trade and investment cooperation, which is growing across sectors like clean energy, construction, services, and agriculture. The increase in Korean tourists to the Lao PDR was noted, enhancing people-to-people exchanges between the nations.

Furthermore, both ministers agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as clean energy, infrastructure development, management, and tourism. They also agreed to strengthen efforts to combat online fraud, a concern causing property damage globally. Additionally, both sides exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
