Heavy Rain, Flood, and Landslide Alerts for Laos Provinces

Vientiane: The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued its third warning regarding heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides expected to affect large parts of Laos between July 22 and 24.

According to Lao News Agency, the official notice (No. 0533/DoMH), issued at 14:00 today, specifies that Tropical Cyclone Wipha, currently located at 20.5°N, 106.2°E, is moving west-northwest at 15 km/h. The cyclone is anticipated to weaken into a depression and then a strong low-pressure system over northern Laos by July 23. This development, along with an active southwest monsoon, is likely to cause widespread thunderstorms, heavy to very heavy rain, and strong winds across the northern and central regions.

The warning highlights that the provinces and districts at risk of flash floods and landslides include Phongsaly, Houaphanh, Xieng Khouang, Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Xayaburi, Xaysomboun, Bolikhamxay, Vientiane Province, Khammouane, Savannakhet, Saravan, Sekong, and Attapeu. Specific areas within these provinces are advised to remain vigilant.

The department is urging ethnic communities, local authorities, and relevant organizations, including those in Vientiane Capital, to exercise heightened caution and prepare for potential urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides over the coming days. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with official weather bulletins from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
