Vientiane: The Embassy of India in Vientiane hosted a reception on January 26, 2026, to mark India's 77th Republic Day, highlighting the enduring friendship between India and the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The gathering was attended by Minister of Technology and Communications Santisouk Simmalavong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Phongsamouth Anlavan, Vice Minister of Industry and Commerce Manothong Vongsay, and Indian Ambassador to Laos Yogeshwar Sangwan. Approximately 300 guests, including government officials, ambassadors, diplomats, members of the Lao and Indian communities, and friends of India, were present.
According to Lao News Agency, the programme began with the national anthems of the Lao PDR and India, followed by a welcome address from the Indian Ambassador. The event featured the raising of toasts by the Ambassador and notable guests.
Ambassador Yogeshwar Sangwan, in his address, discussed the strong and growing bilateral relations between India and the Lao PDR. He outlined India's achievements over the past 77 years and emphasized the shared values forming the foundation of India-Lao PDR relations. He also noted the significance of 2026 as the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, with planned activities throughout the year to celebrate their cooperation and cultural heritage.
Cultural performances were a highlight of the evening, with the National School of Performing Arts presenting an excerpt from the Ramayana, showcasing the cultural links between the two nations. Additionally, Fang Lao, a contemporary dance group, entertained guests with performances set to popular Bollywood songs.
The reception followed earlier Republic Day celebrations at the Embassy's Chancery premises, which included the unfurling of the Indian national flag and cultural performances by members of the Indian community in Laos.
