Vientiane: The Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR hosted a National Day reception on Feb 26, 2026, at the Ambassador's residence in Vientiane to celebrate the 66th birthday of Emperor Naruhito, observed on Feb 23.
According to Lao News Agency, Ambassador Koizumi Tsutomu highlighted the significance of this year for bilateral relations, as Laos marked its 50th anniversary of nationhood and the two countries celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He emphasized the elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and acknowledged high-level exchanges, including visits by President Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, and the Laos-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, alongside Princess Aiko's visit to Laos last year.
Ambassador Koizumi expressed Japan's intent to deepen long-term cooperation with Lao PDR. He pointed out the progress on the reconstruction of Chao Anouvong Stadium, a project supported by Japan and expected to be completed later this year, and expressed hope for expanded sports exchanges in connection with upcoming international sporting events in Japan.
During the reception, Thoummaly Vongphachanh, President of the Laos-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group and Chair of the National Assembly Justice Committee, proposed a toast to the ongoing friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The event was attended by senior Lao officials, including Finance Minister Santiphap Phomvihane and Minister of Public Works and Transport Leklai Sivilay, as well as diplomats, development partners, and representatives of Japanese companies and non-governmental organizations. Guests enjoyed Japanese cuisine and viewed exhibitions showcasing Japan's cooperation activities in Laos.
