Lao and Indonesian Vice Foreign Ministers Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Vientiane: The bilateral meeting between the Lao and Indonesian vice foreign ministers marked a significant occasion as Mr. Matta made his first official visit to Laos since assuming office in 2024. Mr. Anouparb, the Lao Vice Foreign Minister, warmly welcomed his counterpart, highlighting the visit as a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming official visit of the Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to Indonesia in early May 2026.

According to Lao News Agency, both sides expressed their satisfaction with the nearly 70-year-long friendship and cooperation between Laos and Indonesia. Discussions included organizing joint activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. The two officials emphasized the importance of strengthening economic cooperation by promoting trade and investment in key sectors such as processed agriculture, tourism, mining, and services.

During the meeting, the vice ministers exchanged views on regional and global issues, focusing on cooperation in combating human trafficking and addressing transnational crimes like drug trafficking and online scam networks. They also discussed global economic challenges, particularly the ongoing energy crisis and its wider implications. Mr. Anouparb expressed appreciation for Indonesia's support in human resource development and its assistance during Laos's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024.

In response, Mr. Matta thanked the Lao government for its hospitality and reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. He stressed that both countries will continue to work closely to ensure their partnership yields tangible benefits for both nations.
