Lao National Assembly to Review 32 Laws in 2027

Vientiane:The National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic is set to review 32 draft laws in 2027, with a focus on two new laws and 30 amendments. This decision follows a comprehensive review of its legislative work, oversight activities, and international cooperation during 2026.

According to Lao News Agency, these plans were disclosed on October 12 during the second ordinary session of the 10th National Assembly. The session reviewed the legislature's achievements and set priorities for the upcoming year.

In 2026, the National Assembly conducted both inaugural and extraordinary sessions, adopting key resolutions on state budget, monetary policy, rural development, and poverty reduction. The legislature also restructured its organizational framework to align with Party directives aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency.

During its legislative activities, the assembly approved the State Treasury Law and a revised State Budget Law, while also ratifying international agreements concerning cross-border transit, mutual legal assistance, and tax cooperation. Additionally, the National Assembly reinforced oversight on public services, disaster response, and managing citizens' complaints. Over 1.1 billion kip in emergency aid was provided to 10 provinces hit by flooding, and the National Assembly Secretariat processed numerous public petitions.

International cooperation remained a significant focus, with nearly 50 external engagements and participation in regional and international parliamentary forums, such as the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

For the year 2027, the assembly plans to intensify its scrutiny of socio-economic policies and the implementation of the National Agenda on poverty reduction, major infrastructure projects, and government regulations. The lawmakers aim to resolve 30% of outstanding public grievance cases.

Vientiane is also scheduled to host the 18th AIPA Caucus in 2027, offering a platform to strengthen regional parliamentary cooperation. Parliamentary leaders emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among the government, the National Assembly, and provincial People's Councils to tackle economic challenges, improve governance, and ensure legislation supports public interests and sustainable development.
