Hong Kong: Mrs. Darany Phommavongsa, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR), delivered a keynote address at the Asia Cultural Co-operation Forum 2025 in Hong Kong, emphasizing the critical role of cultural connectivity in fostering regional harmony and development.
According to Lao News Agency, Mrs. Phommavongsa highlighted the forum’s significance in strengthening ties among Asian nations. She stated, “In today’s globalized world, cultural connectivity is vital for the survival and development of civilizations.” She noted that Asia’s diverse cultures, traditions, and religions coexist peacefully, united by mutual respect and people-to-people cooperation.
The Deputy Minister underscored the deep-rooted cultural and historical bonds between Laos and China, noting the 64-year diplomatic relationship since 1961. She praised the Laos-China Railway as a transformative project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), describing it as a “symbolic achievement” that aligns with Laos’ national strategy to transition from “landlocked to land-linked.” She also highlighted recent milestones, including the 2024 visit of Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee to Laos and the signing of a memorandum of understanding to expand bilateral cooperation.
Mrs. Phommavongsa outlined Laos’ commitment to safeguarding its cultural legacy, citing UNESCO-recognized sites like Luang Prabang, Vat Phou, and the Plain of Jars, as well as intangible heritage such as khaen music and Lamvong dance. She announced Laos’ plan to nominate Hin Nam Nor National Park as its first natural World Heritage Site. “Culture is the soul of our nation,” she affirmed, detailing government efforts to integrate cultural preservation into education and socio-economic development.
The Deputy Minister lauded China’s leadership in advancing regional cultural cooperation and urged public and private sectors to engage in upcoming Lao cultural events and BRI activities. She commended Hong Kong for hosting platforms like the ASEAN-Hong Kong Film Festival and the Museum Summit, which foster cross-cultural dialogue.
