Vientiane: The 13th meeting of the Lao-Thai Border Coordination Unit (Vientiane Capital-Nong Khai Province) took place on January 28, 2026, at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge I in Nong Khai Province, Thailand. The meeting was attended by a Lao delegation led by Brigadier General Bounlid Sisouphon, Head of Military Affairs of the Vientiane Capital Military Command, and a Thai delegation headed by Major General Mungkhun Hothong, Commander of the Surasak Montree Task Force and Head of the Thai-Lao Border Coordination Team for Nong Khai Province. Representatives from relevant agencies and technical staff from both sides were also present.According to Lao News Agency, both sides exchanged reports on recent activities and discussed key issues, such as immigration control to ensure compliance with the laws and regulations of both countries, as well as cooperation in combating and preventing illegal drug trafficking. The two sides agreed to continue exchanging lessons learned to strengthen cooperation and maintain p eace, order, and stability along the Lao-Thai border. They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation through regular joint patrols, continued exchange visits and study tours between the Lao-Thai armed forces, and close coordination in addressing emerging issues.The discussions also emphasized cooperation in combating illegal labor migration, human trafficking, drug-related crimes, smuggling, scammer gangs, and other transnational crimes, with the aim of effectively managing and safeguarding the shared border. Coordination procedures and operational steps for joint patrols were explained, and a joint patrol was officially launched to ensure effective implementation with full safety. These efforts highlight the cooperative relations between the Lao and Thai armed forces, particularly in the Vientiane Capital-Nong Khai area, in addressing challenges along the river border and reducing illegal activities.The meeting reaffirmed the goal of transforming the border into an area of peace, friendship, a nd sustainable mutual development. The 14th meeting of the Lao-Thai Border Coordination Unit (Vientiane Capital-Nong Khai Province) is set to be hosted by the Lao PDR.
