Vientiane: The Laos-Myanmar Friendship Association and the Myanmar-Laos Friendship Association conducted their inaugural official meeting in Vientiane on November 17, 2025, marking a significant step in enhancing diplomatic ties and people-to-people cooperation between the two countries.
According to Lao News Agency, the meeting was initiated following the arrival of a Myanmar delegation led by Brigadier General Win Maung, the President of the Myanmar-Laos Friendship Association. The delegation’s visit, scheduled from November 16 to 20, was extended upon the invitation of the Lao side.
The discussions were jointly led by Mr. Chanthavong Sengamathmonty, Vice President of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee and President of the Laos-Myanmar Friendship Association, alongside Brigadier General Win Maung. The meeting saw the participation of Myanmar’s Ambassador to Laos, Mr. Aung Ko, along with members and officials from related sectors of both nations.
The discussions centered on reviewing past cooperation activities and charting future plans, with a focus on enhancing mutual understanding and public awareness of the enduring ties between Laos and Myanmar. The associations committed to serving as a platform to promote the strong relationship and cooperation between the Lao PDR and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people diplomacy and positive engagement through joint initiatives.
The Myanmar delegation also paid a courtesy call to Mr. Valasay Lengsavad, Vice Head of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee for External Relations. Mr. Valasay commended the visit, highlighting its significance in bolstering the friendship between the two nations and provided an update on Laos’s socio-economic developments.
In his response, Brigadier General Win Maung expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated Myanmar’s dedication to strengthening bilateral cooperation through the Friendship Associations.
During their stay, the delegation explored historical and cultural sites in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, fostering cultural exchange and understanding between the two countries.
