Laos Mobilizes Nationwide Effort to Tackle Impending Typhoon Wipha

Vientiane: The Central Committee for Natural Disaster Management of Laos on July 21 issued an urgent dispatch to all localities and sectors across the country, calling for proactive measures to respond to Typhoon Wipha, which is forecast to affect multiple provinces in Laos from July 21 to 23 with widespread heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusts of wind.

According to Lao News Agency, the Lao Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has projected that Typhoon Wipha will traverse China’s Hainan Island, downgrade to a tropical depression, and proceed towards northern Vietnam before making a direct impact on various regions in Laos.

Provinces anticipated to experience significant rainfall and strong winds include Phongsaly, Houaphanh, Xiengkhouang, Oudomxay, Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Xayabouly, the capital city of Vientiane, Xaysomboun, Vientiane province, Bolikhamxay, Khammuane, and Savannakhet.

In light of the storm’s unpredictable nature, the committee has emphasized the importance of all agencies, local authorities, and relevant forces implementing measures such as issuing early warnings, enhancing public awareness, pinpointing safe evacuation zones, and securing valuable assets and livestock.

Authorities are encouraged to stay updated with weather information from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology through television, radio, and other media platforms. Regular communication with the committee’s Secretariat and forming teams to monitor river and reservoir levels are also recommended.

Localities have been advised to brace for potential flash floods, landslides, inundation, and strong winds. The committee has called upon armed forces, youth groups, and mass organizations at all levels to remain vigilant and prepared to assist in search and rescue operations.
