Manila: A day before millions of Filipinos are set to cast their votes, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called upon the public to protect the democratic process and elect leaders with integrity. In a video message shared on his official social media account, Marcos highlighted the importance of voting as both a right and a civic duty.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos addressed his fellow citizens, emphasizing the election as an opportunity for every voice to be heard and to express personal and national aspirations. He acknowledged the diversity of political views among Filipinos, noting that this diversity is a hallmark of democracy. However, he warned against allowing differing opinions to result in chaos or intimidation, urging that the future should be contested through ballots rather than on the streets or through violence.
Marcos further encouraged voters to support candidates who demonstrate honesty, compassion, and capability in public service. He also appealed to candidates to respect the electoral decision, urging them to conclude the election with dignity and peace.
With more than 68 million registered voters expected to participate, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that over 18,000 positions will be contested, ranging from senators to municipal councilors. The President called for unity to ensure that the elections are conducted in a clean and peaceful manner.
Marcos has declared Monday, May 12, a non-working holiday nationwide to allow Filipinos to exercise their right to vote, reinforcing his commitment to a fair electoral process.
