Vientiane: The new partnership between the Mekong River Commission (MRC) and Singapore aims to enhance water management in the Mekong region by leveraging Singapore's advanced capabilities in technology, innovation, and urban water management alongside MRC's basin-wide expertise. This collaboration comes at a crucial time as the Mekong region faces increasing challenges from climate change, extreme weather variability, and growing demand for water resources.According to Lao News Agency, Singapore, although not a riparian state, is significantly invested in the developments of the Mekong region. The Singapore Ambassador to Lao PDR, Ong Siew Gay, highlighted the interconnected nature of regional developments, noting that changes in the Mekong River Basin can have far-reaching impacts. He stated Singapore's aim to contribute meaningfully amid the global landscape marked by disruptive change and heightened geopolitical contestation, emphasizing the need for international cooperation.The cooperation framework, set for an initial period of five years, allows for joint development and implementation of activities in line with the MRC Strategic Plan 2026-2030. These activities will focus on strengthening resilience to climate risks such as floods and droughts. Busadee Santipitaks, CEO of the MRC Secretariat, expressed that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore acknowledges the value of regional cooperation. She pointed out that the partnership highlights the necessity of multi-faceted approaches to address the transboundary challenges facing the Mekong River.Singapore's collaboration with MRC members is well established, having trained over 57,000 officials from Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam through the Singapore Cooperation Programme. The country also engages with various MRC member nations on sustainability projects and imports hydropower from Laos. Furthermore, Singapore maintains carbon credit cooperation agreements with all four MRC members, advancing efforts under the Paris Agreement's Article 6.T he opening of the project application process under the Thailand-Singapore Implementation Agreement marks a significant step in realizing these cooperation agreements, aiming for tangible impacts in the region.
