National Radio Chief Reflects on the Journey of Lao National Radio

Vientiane: Boualy Phanouvong, Director General of Lao National Radio, provided insights in an interview on August 5, 2025, leading up to the 75th anniversary of Lao Mass Media and Publishing Day and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Lao National Radio.

According to Lao News Agency, print and broadcast media organizations across the Lao PDR are gearing up to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lao Mass Media and Publishing Day, celebrated on August 13. In his interview, Mr. Boualy traced the history and development of Lao National Radio over the past 75 years.

Initially known as Pathet Lao Radio, Lao National Radio has been crucial in executing its political mission. It served as a significant channel for the Party, encouraging the populace to engage in revolution and oppose colonial forces and traitors. Pathet Lao Radio was a vital political tool for the Party and a platform for patriotic Lao citizens to voice their opinions during the national liberation struggle.

Following the country’s liberation, the station was renamed Lao National Radio and has expanded both in scope and quality, utilizing modern technology to enhance its nationwide reach. Today, it plays a pivotal role in disseminating Party policies, state laws, and government development plans, along with providing news, educational content, and entertainment.

Mr. Boualy highlighted that in the past year, Lao National Radio has successfully fulfilled its professional responsibilities, advancing in numerous areas. It has broadcast Party policies, resolutions, and state legislation through various media formats.

The broadcaster has also focused on promoting significant Party and national events, producing over 1,400 hours of programming. Additionally, Lao National Radio aired 12,700 hours of content via AM and FM systems and more than 6,900 hours through FM 93 MHz in partnership with China Media Group. It has also produced multimedia content shared on its digital platforms.

Director General Boualay emphasized the vital role of Lao mass media in national development, serving as a key communicator of important information on domestic and international issues to the public.
