Over 5,000 Police Officers Set to Ensure Security for Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration

Rome: More than 5,000 police officers will be deployed across Rome for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV on May 18, matching the security presence during the funeral of Pope Francis, Rome Prefect Lamberto Giannini announced Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Giannini stated that the security measures for the enthronement ceremony are expected to be on par with those during the funeral of Pope Francis. The event is anticipated to draw a large number of faithful, prompting the implementation of extensive security protocols.

“There will be over 5,000 members of the police force involved,” Giannini noted. This will include specialized personnel responsible for escorts and maintaining public order, along with snipers, divers, air cover from the Air Force, and anti-drone activities.

Giannini further mentioned that the attendance is projected to reach around 250,000, a number similar to the crowd that gathered in St. Peter’s Square for Pope Francis’ funeral. Preparations for the event are already underway, with efforts in progress to ensure a smooth and secure ceremony.
