Bajo de masinloc: A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel extended assistance to a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel following a collision with a China People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy ship in the West Philippine Sea. The incident occurred near Bajo de Masinloc on Monday morning as the CCG vessel pursued the BRP Suluan at high speed.
According to Philippines News Agency, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, reported that CCG vessel 3104 executed a risky maneuver from the PCG vessel’s starboard quarter, leading to its impact with PLA Navy ship 164. The collision caused significant damage to the CCG vessel’s forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy. In response, the PCG offered assistance for man-overboard recovery and medical aid for any injured CCG crew members.
The incident unfolded amid the presence of approximately 35 Filipino fishing vessels, along with BRP Teresa Magbanua, BRP Suluan, and MV Pamamalakaya, gathered for the ‘Kadiwa Para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda’ initiative. This operation aimed to supply fisherfolk with fuel and essential supplies but faced hazardous maneuvers and blocking attempts from other ships in the vicinity.
Commodore Tarriela noted that the BRP Suluan was specifically targeted with a water cannon, but the PCG crew’s seamanship skills allowed them to evade the attack successfully. The PCG reiterated its commitment to safeguarding maritime operations in the area and expressed wishes for the swift recovery and proper treatment of any affected CCG personnel.
Senators praised the PCG’s humanitarian gesture towards the Chinese crew members despite ongoing harassment. Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada highlighted the PCG’s offer of help even after being targeted with water cannons. Estrada described the collision as a result of reckless actions and urged the CCG to cease maneuvers that endanger maritime personnel and fisherfolk.
Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva emphasized the risks faced by troops asserting jurisdiction and called on China to halt its activities in the West Philippine Sea. Senate Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros criticized Beijing’s actions as reckless, endangering their own people, and advocated for stronger government support for fisherfolk and maritime patrols.
The Department of National Defense (DND) expressed solidarity with the PCG against China’s aggressive behavior, affirming its stance against oppression in the region.
