Dehradun: The Philippines had a successful campaign at the Asian Junior/Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championships, winning 27 gold, 32 silver, and six bronze medals, last Sunday in Dehradun, India. Athletes from the Philippines showcased their strength and skill in various categories, contributing to the country’s impressive medal haul.
According to Philippines News Agency, Sabina Mae Santos was a standout performer, collecting eight gold medals after sweeping the Classic and Equipped categories in the women’s 76kg division. Santos also set new Asian Equipped Sub-Junior records in squat at 190kgs and total at 445kgs, demonstrating her dominance in the field.
Jessa Mae Vivero Tabuan also shone brightly, bagging six gold medals in the Junior women’s 52kg category, with four in Classic and two in the Equipped division, where she set an Asian record. Similarly, Rhadlee Marzan had a remarkable performance in the Junior men’s 53kg category, winning four gold medals and setting an Asian record of 171.5kgs in squat.
In another impressive feat, Jason Galauran secured two gold medals in the Junior men’s 93kg category, registering new Asian Junior records in squat in both the Classic and Equipped divisions. Jane Erasmo, competing in the Junior women’s 57kg class, claimed the bench press gold medal in the Classic division and set an Asian Junior record in the Equipped division.
Ashley Cruz achieved success in the Junior women’s 76kg category by winning the squat gold medal in the Classic division with a new Asian Junior record. Other notable medalists included Alexei Agabon, Angelo Galon, Matthew Fischeder, Ross Teodosio, and Jian Carlos Medina in their respective categories.
In the Asian Classic University Cup, Vince Gutierrez from Tarlac State University excelled by winning three golds and one silver in the men’s 83kg category. His fellow student, Ken Austria, achieved the bench press gold medal with a new Asian University record, along with three silvers in the men’s 105kg category, further highlighting the strength and potential of Filipino athletes on the international stage.
