Kuala lumpur: The Philippines is actively pursuing a closer defense partnership with Timor-Leste, coinciding with the latter’s formal integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This development was highlighted during a bilateral meeting between Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Timor-Leste Defense Minister, Rear Admiral Donaciano Do Rosario Da Costa Gomes, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of National Defense (DND) emphasized that the historical, geographical, and cultural similarities shared by the Philippines and Timor-Leste provide a robust foundation for enhanced bilateral relations. The meeting underscored the intent of both nations to leverage these commonalities to formalize defense cooperation.
The discussions also focused on potential collaborations in maritime security, disaster risk resilience, and people-to-people exchanges. Both ministers reiterated their commitment to fostering mutual understanding and cooperation, contributing to regional peace, stability, and prosperity within the ASEAN community.
During the meeting, Gomes expressed a keen interest in visiting the Philippines to further solidify defense ties. Timor-Leste’s recent admission as the 11th member of ASEAN was marked by the signing of the Declaration on the Admission of Timor-Leste into ASEAN at the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.
Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmo, affirmed the country’s readiness to be a constructive and devoted partner in the region.
