PM Sonexay Siphandone Reviews Progress at Boten Special Economic Zone

Luang namtha: Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, accompanied by his delegation, visited the Boten Beautiful Land Special Economic Zone to assess the ongoing development activities.

According to Lao News Agency, the Prime Minister was welcomed by Provincial Governor Viengsavath Siphandone, alongside other provincial leaders and representatives from local development firms. The developers highlighted the significant advancements within the zone, which include land leveling across 800 hectares, the establishment of electricity and water infrastructure, and the completion of over 40 buildings dedicated to trade, services, education, and retail.

Currently, nearly 1,000 companies, predominantly from countries such as China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, and Malaysia, are operational within the zone, employing a workforce exceeding 10,000, of which 60% are Lao nationals.

In further developments, CGN Energy Technology (Laos) has entered into Project Development Agreements with local authorities for two substantial energy initiatives: a 450 MW wind power project and a 580 MW solar power project, both slated to commence construction by the year’s end.

Additionally, a briefing was provided by Mr. Anixay Soukhavong, President of Lanexang Road and Bridge Construction, on the progress of the Boten-Nateuy Expressway. The highway, a joint venture with Singapore Highway Company, involves an investment of US$163 million.

Prime Minister Sonexay emphasized the importance of advancing infrastructure, particularly transport connectivity, to enhance cross-border trade efficiency. He also stressed attracting quality domestic and foreign investments and promoting export-oriented production, tourism, and local employment within the zone.

During his visit, the Prime Minister toured a garment factory engaged in exporting products such as handbags and belts.
