PM Urges Transformation of Buddhist Fellowship Organization for Enhanced Public Trust

Vientiane: Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has called on the Buddhist Fellowship Organization of the Lao PDR (BFL) to undergo a 'strong, profound and comprehensive transformation' to strengthen public faith in Buddhism and reinforce confidence in Party and state leadership. Speaking at the 9th National Congress of Monks' Representatives on 23 December, Mr. Sonexay emphasized the need for reshaping the ideology and mindset of monks, novices, and lay followers, while reinforcing respect for Buddhist teachings, monastic discipline, and national laws.

According to Lao News Agency, the prime minister urged the BFL to play a stronger role in promoting patriotism, moral values, and social responsibility. He encouraged the mobilization of Buddhists to support Party resolutions and the country's socio-economic development plans. Praising the BFL's achievements over the past five years, Mr. Sonexay acknowledged the challenges that remain and emphasized the need for addressing these to meet agreed targets.

Furthermore, Mr. Sonexay highlighted the necessity for more effective and accessible preaching, including through modern media, and advocated for reforms to religious ceremonies to ensure their relevance in contemporary society. He stressed the importance of preserving temples and sacred sites, expanding social welfare activities, supporting disaster relief, and promoting the use of domestic products in monastic supplies.

He also underlined the role of Buddhist institutions in supporting national priorities, such as combating drug abuse through moral education and public awareness. The prime minister called for stronger cooperation with Buddhist organizations in neighboring countries and internationally, as well as closer engagement with overseas Lao Sangha communities, in line with the country's foreign policy.

Addressing organizational reform, Mr. Sonexay urged the newly elected BFL Central Committee to swiftly translate the congress resolutions into concrete plans and regulations. He emphasized the importance of clearly assigning responsibilities within its leadership and ensuring strict adherence to Buddhist discipline and Sangha regulations. Mr. Sonexay concluded that the Central Committee must serve as a unifying force within the organization and actively contribute to national development and the long-term goal of building socialism in Laos.
