Muntinlupa City: The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) announced a significant advancement in its reform efforts for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) with the unveiling of a renovated college building and improved learning facilities, generously donated by the San Miguel Foundation Inc. (SMF).
According to Philippines News Agency, the BuCor, in collaboration with SMF and the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta-Bilibid Extension School (UPHSD-BES), marked the handover of the newly refurbished UPHSD-BES building at the Medium Security Camp-New Bilibid Prison. The ceremony took place on Tuesday in Muntinlupa City.
The renovation, financed by SMF, has equipped the building with a modern computer laboratory, updated school supplies, and comfortable seating arrangements. These enhancements are part of the foundation’s “Better World Bilibid” initiative, aiming to provide PDLs with necessary resources for education and personal growth during their incarceration.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. expressed profound appreciation for Ramon Ang, chairman and CEO of San Miguel Corporation (SMC), and his daughter, Cecile Ang, who leads the SMF. Catapang emphasized the significance of the public-private collaboration in promoting education as a cornerstone for the reformation and reintegration of PDLs.
“In addition to the PHP50-million investment in educational facilities, the SMF has also begun fulfilling a PHP100 million food commitment, spread over three years, as pledged by the SMC chairman,” Catapang noted.
Cecile Ang reiterated the foundation’s dedication to social initiatives, including education and environmental care. She expressed hope that the improvements, reflected in the transformation of school facilities, would encourage PDLs to believe in their potential for change.
“This change, like the transformation of school buildings, will guide and inspire our belief that we can change our lives for the better,” Ang stated. She also shared a personal lesson on discipline from her father, an orphan, emphasizing that dedication and improvement lead to success.
