Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army (RTA) confirmed that clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border have ceased. This development comes after military commanders from both countries reached a mutual agreement to enforce a ceasefire and halt troop movements ahead of the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for August 4.

According to Lao News Agency, RTA spokesman Major General Vinthai Suwaree announced the outcome of the trilateral military discussions held on July 29. Discussions took place across three key border zones at 10 am, resulting in an agreement to maintain peace and stability in the region.

The first discussion involved representatives from Thailand’s First Army Region and Cambodia’s Fifth Military Region at the Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province. The meeting, led by the commander of Thailand’s First Army Region, concluded with both sides agreeing to refrain from troop movements to reduce suspicion and maintain stability while awaiting the GBC meeting. Commanders at all levels have been given the authority to communicate directly in urgent situations.

The second discussion saw the gathering of Thailand’s Second Army Region and Cambodia’s Fourth Military Region at the Chong Chom checkpoint in Kap Choeng district, Surin province. Led by the Thai Second Army Region commander, the meeting focused on an immediate ceasefire, a ban on using force or weapons against civilians, and a freeze on troop reinforcements or repositioning to avoid misunderstandings. Both sides agreed to these terms and established a joint coordination team of four personnel from each side to address urgent issues and prevent further incidents.

The third discussion involved the Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defence Force and Cambodia’s Third Military Region, chaired by the commander of the Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defence Force. The agreement mirrored the terms reached in the First Army Region meeting, reaffirming shared goals for de-escalation.

Vinthai highlighted that a complete ceasefire had already been observed across the border, reflecting a shared commitment to reducing tensions and fostering sincere military dialogue.
