Oudomxay: That Phon, a Buddhist stupa, and Heuan Hin, a historic stone house, along with their surrounding areas, were officially recognized as national cultural heritage sites during a ceremony held on January 29, 2026, at Ban Phone That, Xayphouthong District, Savannakhet Province.According to Lao News Agency, the ceremony was attended by key figures including Mr. Bounchoum Ubonprasert, Secretary of the Savannakhet Provincial Party Executive Committee; Mr. Kongkaew Mivorachak, President of the Provincial People's Assembly; and Ms. Daovone Xaysulyeun, President of the Provincial Administrative Committee, alongside business representatives and numerous local residents.During the event, Mr. Phomma Songvilay, President of the Xayphouthong District Administrative Committee, spoke about the successful preparations that culminated in the national-level heritage recognition. He also marked the official opening of the 2026 Phathat Phon Festival.Mr. Phomma detailed that Phathat Phon is an ancient religious monu ment with deep spiritual significance for local communities. Legend suggests that the stupa was constructed in 118 BE using laterite stone shaped like a lotus bud, and it is believed to be over 2,500 years old.Heuan Hin, also known as the Stone House, is thought to be among 121 rest houses built during King Jayavarman VII's reign, from 1181 to 1218, along ancient roads that connected regions of the Khmer Empire. The site shares architectural traits with the Vat Phou temple complex in Champassak Province and the Phimai temple in Thailand.The annual festival is a reflection of the local populace's faith and devotion, aiding in the preservation of cultural traditions while promoting sustainable cultural tourism.The celebration included cultural and literary performances by students, traditional dances by the Provincial Ethnic Culture Club, and exhibitions of local and ODOP products from Xayphouthong and neighboring districts, totaling 175 booths. The event was further enhanced by traditional wax castle pro cessions and vibrant fireworks displays.
