Vientiane: The economy of Vientiane has expanded at an average annual rate of 5.34% over the past five years, according to figures presented on 15 December 2025 in Vientiane at the 10th Session of the 4th Vientiane People's Council.According to Lao News Agency, economic growth reached 4.13% in 2021, 4.83% in 2022, 5.30% in 2023, and 5.85% in 2024, with growth expected to accelerate to 6.6% in 2025. The total gross domestic product for 2025 is projected at 89.28 trillion kip, exceeding the five-year plan target, while per capita GDP is expected to average 85.17 million kip, or about US$3,872, also above target.Reporting to the session in Vientiane on Monday, Athsaphangthong Siphandone, Mayor of Vientiane, stated that although overall growth had not fully met planned targets, the city's economic structure had shifted broadly in line with development objectives. Agriculture's share of GDP declined from 14.3% in 2020 to 13% in 2025, industry edged down from 49.5% to 49%, while services increased from 36.2% to 38%, exceeding the target and reflecting a continued transition towards a service-led economy.In the agricultural sector, six of nine targets set by the People's Council are expected to be achieved, including vegetables, fruit, cassava, poultry meat, cage fish farming, and egg production. Rice, corn, and sugarcane output, however, are projected to fall short of targets.Tourism recorded stronger-than-expected performance over the five-year period, with 5.64 million domestic and international visits reported, exceeding the council's resolution by 12%. Tourism revenue is estimated at US$1.32 billion, more than double the planned level.
