Vientiane Women’s Union Outlines Future Goals for Empowerment and Support

Vientiane:The Vientiane Women's Union has evaluated its achievements over the first nine months of 2026 and set objectives for the remainder of the year and into 2027. The focus remains on women's empowerment, vocational training, gender equality, and the protection of women and children.

According to Lao News Agency, the review was conducted during the union's Second Executive Committee Plenary Meeting of its Ninth Term on October 8-9, under the leadership of President Liankham Vilaphan. The meeting was also attended by Lao Women's Union President Aly Vongnorbountham and Vientiane Party Committee Deputy Secretary Thavixay Maosomphou.

Vientiane's union comprises 57,380 female members, organized into 666 grassroots units and 169 branches. The union has been active in promoting policies and laws, along with providing counseling and support services for women and children through hotlines and digital platforms.

In response to hailstorm damage in Phon Somboun village, the union has provided relief supplies, financial assistance, and vocational training, including golden apple snail farming, to help 25 families establish income-generating activities.

Financial support efforts include a women's and family development microfinance institution that runs 34 service units. This institution manages a revolving fund exceeding LAK 1.23 billion and has issued loans totaling LAK 4.43 billion to bolster livelihoods and income generation.

For the final quarter of 2026, the union plans to continue policy education, commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and World Children's Day, and enhance cooperation with women's organizations in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, which includes plans to sign a memorandum of understanding in November.

In 2027, the union's priorities will include expanding vocational training for disadvantaged women, promoting gender equality, safeguarding the rights of women and children, strengthening family development, and improving the transparency and legal compliance of mutual-aid funds.
