Xayabuly: The 18th Xayabuly Provincial Elephant Festival officially commenced on February 22, 2025, in Xayabuly Province, marking a grand celebration of Laos’ cultural heritage with the participation of 50 elephants. The event saw the presence of Mr. Bounthong Chitmany, Vice President of Laos, alongside his spouse. In attendance were also Mr. Phongsavanh Sitthavong, Governor of Xayabuly Province, his spouse, high-ranking party-state leaders, provincial officials, and numerous domestic and international guests, as well as local residents.
According to Lao News Agency, the opening ceremony featured a vibrant array of cultural performances, including traditional dances from eight ethnic groups, an Elephant Festival dance, and a celebratory performance involving 1,800 students. A procession of cultural and tourism banners further enriched the event, culminating in an elaborate elephant parade that highlighted various aspects of Lao traditions and elephant conservation efforts.
Key attractions included National Flag Procession, processions representing the province’s elderly, its eight ethnic tribes, and all 11 districts. Spectators were treated to unique performances by elephants, such as synchronized movements, balancing acts, dancing to drumbeats, and engaging in activities like soccer, basketball, and painting. Elephants also demonstrated traditional Lao boxing and carried people, rolled large objects, and performed other impressive feats.
Throughout the festival, visitors can experience daily elephant performances, elephant riding services, and explore local markets showcasing traditional handicrafts. Artistic performances by students, concerts, visits to the Phukaen Elephant Conservation Center, and sightseeing tours of Xayabuly’s tourist destinations provide a comprehensive cultural experience.
