Vientiane:The 25th Lao Handicraft Festival has commenced in Vientiane under the theme, 'The Beauty of Lao Handicrafts A Paradise for Tourism - 25 Years of Growth, Preserving Traditional Wisdom and Promoting the Value of Lao Handicrafts Towards World Heritage Recognition.' The festival showcases traditional crafts through more than 200 exhibition booths and demonstrations by 18 groups from all 17 provinces and Vientiane Capital.
According to Lao News Agency, the opening ceremony saw the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Santiphab Phomvihane, along with government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, and handicraft artisans from across Laos.
The festival provides a platform for a diverse array of traditional products, including silk and cotton textiles, silver and gold jewelry, gemstones, rattan and bamboo products, pottery, wood carvings, and traditional musical instruments. Additionally, local food, herbal products, and other cultural items are on display.
Artisans from Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, and Japan are participating, fostering cultural exchange and regional cooperation in the handicraft sector. Visitors have the opportunity to observe traditional production techniques through live demonstrations of weaving, silk reeling, cotton spinning, silverwork, basket weaving, pottery-making, and wood carving.
Beyond promoting local products, the festival aims to pass traditional skills to younger generations and create opportunities for local businesses and communities. It also underscores the contribution of handicrafts to tourism development and the promotion of Laos' cultural identity internationally.
The Lao Handicraft Association uses this annual event to strengthen public appreciation of traditional craftsmanship and to ensure the preservation of the skills and knowledge of Lao artisans for future generations.
