Vientiane: Government officials, representatives of international organisations, and Vientiane residents gathered at Patouxay in Vientiane this morning to participate in a community walk celebrating the 139th anniversary of International Labour Day.
According to Lao News Agency, the event was attended by prominent figures including Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, President of the Lao Front for National Development Mr. Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, and leaders from the Lao National Federation of Trade Unions. Ministers and heads of the trade unions from various ministries also joined the walk, marking the significance of the day.
Mr. Leth Xayaphone, President of the Lao Federation of Trade Unions, highlighted the historical importance of May Day. “The International Labour Day commemorates May 1 in 1886, when workers around the world united in making a stand against the oppression they suffered under their employers. Workers demanded an eight-hour working day, eight hours of rest, and eight hours for recreat
ion,” he stated. He further emphasized how this dedication led to global recognition of workers’ rights and their critical role in the economy.
The origins of International Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, date back to 1886. This was when the Haymarket Riot occurred, involving violent clashes between labourers and police in Chicago. Thousands of workers marched demanding an eight-hour workday. In 1889, the Second International, a global organization of socialist and labour parties, declared May 1 as International Workers’ Day to honor the Haymarket event and advocate for workers’ rights.
