Manila: A week before the 2025 elections, the Department of Energy (DOE) ordered the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the National Electrification Administration (NEA), electric cooperatives (ECs), and private distribution utilities (DUs) to immediately remove obstructions from power infrastructure to ensure safe and uninterrupted 2025 elections.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOE had received reports from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) regarding widespread violations involving campaign materials illegally affixed to power poles and electrical wires.
The DOE emphasized that campaign materials placed near or within power lines are unlawful and could cause accidents, including electrocution and fires, endangering both utility workers and the public.
The department has called on the NGCP, NEA, ECs, and DUs to coordinate closely with local government units and the Comelec’s Special Task Force Baklas to facilitate the swift and safe removal of campaign materials.
The DOE stated that this move is part of its commitment to ensure the unimpeded flow of electricity, protect public safety, and preserve the integrity of the national power grid throughout the election period.
“The delivery of stable and reliable electricity is a national priority, especially during elections when the democratic process relies heavily on uninterrupted power,” Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla stated.
“We are resolute in our mandate to safeguard energy infrastructure and are working closely with Comelec and our energy stakeholders to ensure that the power sector infrastructure remains clear of any obstructions, especially those that endanger lives and disrupt essential services.”
