Manila: The Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) new safety regulations for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers earned full support from Senator Joseph Victor ‘JV’ Ejercito, who cited the urgent need to address the rising number of road accidents involving public transport.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ejercito, a motorist and cyclist, expressed his full support for the new policies announced by DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon aimed at improving road safety. Ejercito emphasized the ongoing relevance of Republic Act 10916, also known as the Road Speed Limiter Act of 2016, which he authored. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing the safety of the public and taking proactive measures to prevent speed-related accidents.
In light of recent traffic incidents, Ejercito stressed the necessity for stricter regulations and higher driving standards for public transport operators. He acknowledged that while safety is a collective responsibility, PUV drivers bear a greater burden. He emphasized the need for drivers to be in optimal physical, mental, and emotional condition when operating vehicles.
Ejercito shared his personal experiences, noting how fatigue, inadequate training, and substance abuse can lead to tragic accidents. He expressed his support for the DOTr and transport stakeholders in implementing reforms and urged fellow legislators and agencies to support complementary measures. These include improving working conditions for drivers, providing accessible training, and promoting road safety awareness campaigns.
