Army Honors Ex-Rebel as Outstanding Paramilitary Trooper in Negros

Negros: A former New People’s Army (NPA) rebel, now aligned with the Philippine Army in northern Negros, has been recognized as this year’s Outstanding Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary (CAA) by the 3rd Infantry Division (ID). Eduardo Linogon Jr., aged 33, was acknowledged for his “acts of heroism, loyalty, and gallantry in action” while serving as a member of the Delta Company of the 79th Infantry Battalion (IB) based in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

According to Philippines News Agency, Linogon’s transformation from a former rebel to an award-winning peacekeeper is seen as a testament to service and redemption. This accolade was highlighted by the 79IB commander, Lt. Colonel Arnel Calaoagan, in a statement. Notably, Linogon is the second consecutive 79IB CAA to receive this recognition, following Jason Traya’s award last year. The award was presented by 3ID commander Maj. Gen. Michael Samson during a ceremony at the division headquarters in Jamindan, Capiz on April 21.

Linogon, who was recruited into the armed struggle as a minor, spent 16 years with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army. Over time, he served as a mass base supporter, courier, and combatant. After surrendering in 2023, he joined the CAA, taking on a role at the patrol base in Barangay Caduhaan, Cadiz City. His insider knowledge of enemy movements and contacts made him a significant asset to the unit, as noted by the 79IB.

His contributions were particularly notable during a series of armed encounters between NPA remnants and 79IB troops in Barangay Pinapugasan, Escalante City, from February 21 to 27, 2024. Despite being wounded, Linogon demonstrated exceptional courage, aiding in the neutralization of three communist terrorists and the recovery of 16 high-powered firearms and four low-powered firearms, as reported by the Army unit.

1Lt. Dan Carlo Samoza, the 79IB civil-military operations officer, expressed that Linogon is grateful for the opportunity provided by the Philippine Army to start anew after his departure from the armed struggle. In receiving the award, Linogon conveyed his sincere intention to return to lawful society and urged his former comrades to consider surrendering as well.
