Public Works Minister Surveys Progress of Mekong River Embankment in Vientiane

Vientiane: Minister of Public Works and Transport Leklay Sivilay, accompanied by senior officials from the Vientiane Administration Office, conducted an inspection of the ongoing embankment construction project along the Mekong River in the Chi Nai Mo area, Hatxayfong district.

According to Lao News Agency, the construction project is financed by the Economic Development Cooperation Fund from the Republic of Korea government. The fund offers concessional loans to developing countries under long-term, low-interest conditions to aid their economic and industrial growth.

The visiting team was greeted by Phutthasen Sinthavong, Deputy Director of the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department. Mr. Sinthavong highlighted that the project, initiated in February 2022, involves building a 9.3-km embankment serving as both a flood-control dike and a riverside walkway. This structure extends from Wat Nak village in Sisattanak district to Hat Dok Keo village in Hatxayfong district.

The project encounters difficulties due to its location in densely populated areas, which limits working hours and complicates the transportation of raw materials to the site. Nighttime construction is restricted to prevent disturbances to nearby communities. Despite these challenges, 89.3% of the project is completed, with an expected completion date set for June 2026.

Upon completion, the embankment is expected to protect flood-prone regions from Sikhot district to Hatxayfong district and offer a new recreational area for Vientiane residents and visitors. Mr. Sinthavong has urged the public to avoid entering the construction zone to prevent accidents and traffic issues.

Minister Leklay Sivilay emphasized the need to adhere to the project timeline while minimizing its social impact on local communities.
