Laos and Cambodia Celebrate 70 Years of Diplomatic Relations with Tourism Initiatives

Tunis:Laos and Cambodia have marked 70 years of diplomatic relations by focusing on enhancing tourism cooperation. The celebration was co-hosted by the Lao Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism. It was led by Lao Minister of Culture and Tourism Suanesavanh Vignaket and Cambodian Minister of Tourism Huot Hak.

According to Lao News Agency, the event featured the 5th Tourism Technical Working Group Meeting, a tourism and investment seminar, business-matching sessions for public and private sector representatives, an exhibition showcasing tourism and local products, friendship sports activities, and familiarisation trips for journalists and business operators.

During the technical working group meeting, both nations agreed on the minutes and adopted a Joint Tourism Action Plan for 2026-2028. Discussions included expanding international flight services to major tourist destinations and reviewing the memorandum of understanding on tourism cooperation. A significant focus was placed on developing an ancient heritage route linking Vat Phou in Champasak Province with Angkor Wat in Cambodia, with a trial walking trail of 3.7 kilometres already open.

The countries also considered organising seminars and exchanging experiences in managing World Heritage sites. They aim to jointly market combined tourism itineraries to attract more international visitors. These initiatives are expected to strengthen cross-border tourism, encourage investment and business partnerships, and deepen people-to-people exchanges, further building on seven decades of diplomatic relations.
