PBBM Vows Reforms After Deadly SCTEX, NAIA 1 Tragedies

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday vowed to implement reforms in the country’s transport system and ensure accountability for recent tragic vehicular accidents. In a video message posted on his official Facebook page, President Marcos expressed sympathy to the families of those who died and were injured in the recent tragedies at the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) toll plaza and Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos highlighted the gravity of the incidents, noting that ten lives were lost in a collision in Tarlac and, just days later, two more, including a child, succumbed to an accident at the airport. He stressed that these incidents were preventable and vowed to implement necessary changes and ensure accountability.

President Marcos has directed Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon to take immediate action to identify those responsible for the accidents. Additionally, reforms will be introduced to enhance the safety of commuters and travelers. A comprehensive review of the driver licensing system is planned, aimed at ensuring only qualified individuals are permitted to drive. A nationwide audit of bus operators will also be conducted to ensure adherence to safety and maintenance standards.

Further directives include the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) addressing unsafe and exploitative practices within the transport sector. These practices often lead to driver fatigue and excessively long working hours, which compromise public safety.

The President emphasized the importance of not only expressing sympathy but also taking decisive action to prevent future tragedies. “We owe it to the victims and their families to act-not only with sympathy, but with resolve. These lives must not be lost in vain,” he stated.
