Champasak:Upgraded roads and improved tourism facilities in Southern Laos have led to a noticeable increase in visitor numbers, contributing to economic growth in the region. This development was reported during a media tour attended by Lao journalists from October 29-31, 2026, where officials discussed the positive impacts on local communities.
According to Lao News Agency, Phaivanh noted that the enhancements in Nakasang, as well as on Don Det and Don Khone islands, have resulted in a steady rise in tourism. This surge has provided economic opportunities for over 3,200 residents, enabling them to benefit from the tourism boom in their areas.
Asian Development Bank Country Director for Laos, Shanny Campbell, emphasized the broader economic benefits of tourism. She stated that for every US$1 invested in the sector, there is an average return of US$3, with positive effects reaching other economic sectors. Tourism not only brings in foreign currency but also supports the payment of essential imports and creates job and business opportunities. These developments allow local communities to sustain livelihoods without needing to relocate for work.
Yo Bouthtivong, head of the Don Det-Don Khone Tour Guide Community Service Association, highlighted the association's operation of 28 vehicles, including 10 electric vehicles, for tourist transportation. The rental price for an electric vehicle accommodating up to 10 people is 330,000 kip per day. For larger groups visiting attractions like Ban Hang Khone and Li Phi Waterfall, the fee is 550,000 kip per day. Yo pointed out that the tourism infrastructure development project has significantly improved the lives of local community members.
