Vientiane: Australian Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Ms Megan Jones, hosted an Australia Day reception in Vientiane, highlighting the historical and cultural ties between Australia and the Lao PDR. The event marked 74 years of diplomatic relations, celebrating a partnership that has endured and thrived through changing global landscapes.

According to Lao News Agency, the ceremony was attended by notable figures including Ms. Bounkham Vorachit, Governor of the Bank of the Lao PDR, and Ms Phongsamouth Anlavanh, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. The audience also included senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and representatives from international organizations. Ambassador Jones emphasized the significance of Australia Day and Australia's multicultural society, which includes significant ties to Southeast Asia.

Ambassador Jones reflected on the shared history and future aspirations of both nations, stressing the importance of the longstanding friendship with Laos. This partnership, Australia's longest unbroken bilateral relationship with any nation, is characterized by trust, mutual respect, and friendship.

The Comprehensive Partnership signed by the prime ministers of both countries in 2024 aims to further strengthen cooperation in various sectors, including education, health, trade, and investment. For decades, Lao students have studied in Australia, contributing to Laos' development upon their return. Currently, Australian alumni in Laos are influential in various fields such as government, business, and the arts.

Australia's support in combating dengue fever and involvement in significant national events like the 75th Media Day celebrations highlight the active collaboration between the two countries. Recent economic strategies, including the establishment of a blueberry farm by Australian company Costa in Laos, underscore the growing economic ties.

In the coming years, Australia and Laos will continue to expand their cooperation, particularly in combatting climate change through initiatives like the Laos-Australia Agriculture Resilience Initiative. As the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations approaches, both nations look forward to building upon their achievements and fostering a future of continued partnership and mutual growth.
